Self-defined projects

There are two options available for students wishing to undertake a self-defined project. This can either be based in St Andrews and supervised by an academic from the University of St Andrews (Option 1), or part of the Laidlaw International Partnership based and supervised at one of our international Laidlaw partner institutions (Option 2):

Option 1: Based in St Andrews, and therefore have a supervisor from the University of St Andrews.
Option 2: Part of the Laidlaw International Partnership. A research project based and supervised at one of our international Laidlaw Partners (currently only available at Tufts University, Trinity College Dublin, the University of Toronto, and the University of Hong Kong).

Option 1 – St Andrews
If you wish to apply for a self-defined project you will devise the project parameters, based upon your research interests, and gain the support of an academic member of staff from the University of St Andrews who is willing to supervise you (here is the Laidlaw Supervisor reference template that they will need to complete). These projects are usually supervised by someone from the University of St Andrews, but there is the possibility of being a visiting scholar at another institution as part of the summer research project. This is arranged on a case by case basis during your scholarship. For example, if your supervisor knows a colleague at another institution who works in your area of research, and is willing to accept you as a visiting scholar during the summer research project, then this can be arranged. The university that you would be visiting does not have to offer the Laidlaw programme.

Option 2 – Overseas
If you have been able to identify a willing supervisor working at an overseas University within the Laidlaw group, you can undertake a project with a supervisor based at the overseas institution (please note that full supervision is currently only available at Tufts University, Trinity College Dublin, the University of Toronto, and the University of Hong Kong). You can still identify and work with a supervisor at any other Laidlaw institution but would be required to have a primary supervisor who is based at St Andrews. Projects of this type would be for the full two years, with both summers (a research peoject in year one, and a leadership in action project in year two) spent overseas. In this case, the leadership element of the programme is still controlled by the home University; only the research component is carried out abroad. Some of our partner institutions follow a specific process for finding supervisors and identifying projects. Please see below for further details:

For any other institution, you should see if one of our St Andrews academics has any contacts, or visit the website of a Partner-University to identify academics and their contact details who have research interests that are aligned with your proposed project idea.
